Signs A Panel Is Working Harder Than It Should
Older homes were wired for a different amount of electricity than we now use.
Houses have not changed much. What we plug into them has. A panel sized for a family with one television is now serving a home office, a second refrigerator, and in many driveways a vehicle that draws more than the rest of the house combined.
Symptoms worth taking seriously
- Lights that dim when a large appliance starts
- Breakers that trip during ordinary use rather than under unusual load
- Warmth on a breaker or on the panel cover
- A buzzing or crackling sound from the panel
- Outlets or switch plates that feel warm
The ones that are urgent
Heat, sound and smell are not maintenance items. Any of them means stop using that circuit and have it inspected. Warmth means resistance somewhere in a connection, and resistance in a connection is how an electrical fire starts.
Why extension cords hide the problem
Power strips make an overloaded circuit feel solved because everything still works. The wiring in the wall does not know how many outlets you added, and a circuit that keeps up until it does not is the same circuit either way.
What an assessment looks at
The service size coming into the house, the condition of the connections, whether the panel brand has known defects, whether circuits are grouped sensibly for how the house is actually used, and whether protective devices are present where current code expects them.
