Why Drying Takes Longer Than It Looks
The carpet is dry on day two and the job is not finished. This is the part homeowners find hardest, and it is worth understanding.
Surfaces dry first and mean the least. What determines whether a building actually dried is what happened inside the materials, and no one can see that by touching them.
Where the water hides
Water wicks upward into drywall, sideways into baseboards and cabinet kickboards, downward into subfloor, and into the insulation in a wall cavity where nothing moves. A wall can read completely dry on the surface with the cavity still saturated.
How it is actually measured
With moisture meters and with readings taken from the same points every day, compared against a dry standard elsewhere in the building. Drying is finished when the readings say so, not when the room feels normal. A daily log is a reasonable thing to ask to see.
Why the equipment is loud and stays a while
Air movers break the boundary layer of still air against wet surfaces, and dehumidifiers pull the released moisture out of the air so it does not simply move into something else. Turning them off overnight because of the noise can add days.
Why cutting is sometimes the fast answer
Removing a section of wet drywall or a run of baseboard opens a cavity so it can dry in days rather than weeks, and often saves the wall above it. A small deliberate cut early is usually less demolition than a wall that never dried.
